An American Music Series – Presented by Anna Givens
Feb. – Sept. 2014
Jazz singer Anna Givens has established herself as “one of the cats” in northwestern Ohio over the last seven years in performances ranging from duos, trios, and combos up to full on 18 piece big bands. She earned her wings with legendary Toledo and Detroit area jazz masters Clifford Murphy and the late Claude Black, Johnny O’Neal, and John Hendrix. She has been the featured vocalist with Jeff McDonald’s Swingmania Big Band for the last four years. She was with them last year when they won the Detroit Battle of the Swing Bands and again when they returned to win the title for a second consecutive time on March 1st at the Detroit Masonic Temple Crystal Ballroom. She has released three critically acclaimed albums of American Songbook and show tunes. Her current band, Anna Givens with Atlas Jazz, features renowned saxophonist Paul DeVee and former Spinners drummer, Ted Smith.
This past July, Anna brought her own all-star band to the State Room in The State Theatre in Sandusky to a full house of enthusiastic music lovers. The show was so successful that Anna and the State Theatre management decided to create a continuing series in the venue. So this year, Anna has moved to the other side of the lights and become the promoter of a concert series focused on presenting top regional artists representing the wide range of styles and backgrounds that comprise modern American music. The informal concerts will be held at The State Theatre in Sandusky, Ohio starting on Valentine’s Day, Friday, February 14, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. in the State Room and on every second Friday of each month thereafter through September. There will be a cash bar in the room. The idea is to cultivate a local music scene here in Sandusky that will support the fine musicians and their fans that make their home in North Coast Ohio. Support from the local media, including The Sandusky Register, The Norwalk Reflector, Kelly Rose at WLKR 95.3, and local businesses and public institutions have been key to the project.
The remarkably varied list of entertainers that has been booked for this year’s series includes exceptional regional artists from the worlds of Bluegrass, Irish Traditional, Blues, Soul, Rock, Americana, Country, Jazz, and R&B.
